Application

This website provides a one-stop shop, where you can apply, make payments, submit videos, check for status updates, results and latest news and releases about the annual piano competition.

Eligibility

We welcome applications from schools and institutions, by invitation.
Eligible applicants for Amateur Division are those who are 18 years old or younger, and who are learning the piano as a hobby, and adults older than 18 and who play the piano as a hobby.
Eligible applicants for Professional Division are those aged 9 or older, and who are receiving formal training in practical musicianship in preparation for a music-related career.

There is no age limit for Amateur Duet contestants.
If your school is not on the organizer’s invitation list, you can still apply. Your application will be carefully studied by the vetting committee. If you are eligible, you will be informed, and you will then be required to submit your competition pieces and follow any other procedures, as required. If you are considered non-eligible, the organizer will inform you and refund your application fee in full (via the same payment channel).

Competition Rules

There are three divisions: Amateur Solo, Professional Solo, and Amateur Duet.

Amateur Solo

Professional Solo

P/A Junior Professional: One étude and first movement from a sonata-allegro (Classical period) for the preliminary round. One self-chosen repertoire (approximately 5 minutes) for the final round.
P/B Youth Professional: One étude and one sonata-allegro (any period) for the preliminary round. One self-chosen repertoire (5-10 minutes) for the final round.
P/C Adult Professional: One étude and one sonata-allegro (any period) for the preliminary round. One self-chosen repertoire or suite (10-15 minutes) for the final round.
The repertoire must be performed from memory in one go. No pause and repeats are allowed, unless specified in the original score.

There are three divisions: Amateur Solo, Professional Solo, and Amateur Duet.

Please Note: Age restrictions, based on date of birth, change from year to year, so you should check back to verify the age limitations for each competition. The age restrictions below are for the 2023 competition.

Video Requirements and Submission

Please follow the video-submission procedures carefully. Once submitted, no alterations or changes will be allowed. Applicants will be disqualified if their videos do not meet the following requirements:

Video shooting: Video must be in MOV or MP4 format, in 1080p or 4K resolution, and 16:9 horizontal; pianist must be in centre of frame, and his or her face and hands must be clearly visible. Cameras should be stable, preferably on a tripod or stand. Hand-held cameras are not suitable. The entire piece must be filmed in one continuous shot. We will not accept altered, edited, enhanced and/or beautified videos.
Background: The background must be well-lit, clean and uncluttered; the audio volume should be at an appropriate level, with no background noise.

Cancellation and withdrawal

Contestants who wish to cancel their application or withdraw from the competition should inform the organizer of their decision. Application fees are non-refundable.

I/my guardian:

Has read, understood and agrees with the above application and competition information provided by Joy of Music International Invitational Piano Competition;
Own the copyright to the submitted competition video;
Confirm the submitted competition video has never been used in another competition;
Authorize the organizer of the competition to use the information submitted, inclusive of competition videos and photographs, among other information; and
Understand the application fees are non-refundable under any circumstance.
